Best Bruny Island Accommodation for Your Next Picture-Perfect Escape

Pack up the car, drive onto the ferry and check into one of these beautiful Bruny Island stays.

Bruny Island is one of Tasmania’s most beloved destinations – popular not just for its stunning coastal beauty but its handy location. The ferry terminal at Kettering is just 40 minutes drive south of Hobart and then it’s a short boat ride across to the island. It’s like heading to Tasmania for its island serenity, then taking an extra step for ultimate relax, reset and recharge vibes.

Once on Bruny Island, there’s loads to do and see, from hiking two of Tasmania’s 60 Great Short Walks (try to spot a rare white wallaby), exploring South Bruny National Park to visit the lighthouse and feasting on Bruny Island cheese, oysters and baked goods. Or, you can do a whole lot of nothing and just gaze at the views – something the vast majority of Bruny Island accommodation delivers on.

If you’re planning an island getaway, we’ve uncovered the best Bruny Island accommodation to be your haven for the weekend, or longer if you’re lucky.

The Hide

This off-grid tiny home is the ultimate Bruny Island accommodation if you’re looking to unwind somewhere remote and secluded. Perfect for a couple or even a solo trip, The Hide is located on a large property in the private enclave of Sheepwash Bay, at the top of South Bruny – a great central base for all your exploring needs. That’s if you feel like leaving your space, with its clawfoot bath featuring a stunning view of the bay, outdoor fire pit and cosy indoor fireplace.

Bruny Shearers Quarters

If you’re looking to splurge on Bruny Island accommodation and you’re an architecture and design fan, Shearers Quarters is worth checking out. Designed by architect John Wardle (and located on his family’s working sheep farm), this incredible three-bedroom property has won multiple design awards and been featured in several international publications. The house has an emphasis on sustainability, with recycled apple boxes used to build the internal walls, and bricks made on the farm in the 1830s used to build the house’s chimney. With views of Storm Bay out of the floor-to-ceiling windows and access to three private beaches, the house’s surrounding environment is as beautiful as its interiors.

Bruny Sea House

Bruny Sea House sits right on the edge of the water, with its windows and large deck offering beautiful views across to Satellite Island. The three-bedroom renovated 1950s beach shack is perfectly situated in Alonnah, making it a great central Bruny Island accommodation for seeing the island’s best spots. The Sea House also comes with its own kayaks to explore the shoreline that the house sits on, so adventure is literally right at your doorstep. It’s a treat coming home to that huge deck to enjoy the sunset and a few well-earned Bruny Island oysters, too.

Looking For La Perouse

Named for French explorer Antoine Bruni d’Entrecasteaux who came to search for fellow explorer Jean-Francois La Perouse in the late 1700s, Looking for La Perouse gives guests gorgeous views over the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. Situated at the north end of Bruny Island at Dennes Point, the two-bedroom house sits just off Nebraska Beach, a wild and beautiful shoreline ripe for beachcombing, rock-hopping and paddling. Back at the house, use the BBQ on the back deck to cook up a meal and lay in the hammock to watch the sun go down.

Birdsong

When you’re thinking about the best spot for your Bruny Island accommodation, Adventure Bay will be high on your list – and the beautiful Birdsong is a great option. This area is popular given its beauty and its proximity to some of the best walks on Bruny Island (including the Fluted Cape Track, one of Tasmania’s 60 Great Short Walks). This two-bedroom property – which comes with a lovely outdoor bath and fire pit – is nestled in bushland overlooking Adventure Bay and feels incredibly secluded while being only a short drive from the beach.

Seagrass

This Scandinavian-inspired cabin is handily located in Alonnah, one of the main townships in Bruny Island. Walk to the edge of Seagrass and you’ll walk right into the water of Sunset Bay – that’s how waterfront it is. Or, enjoy the seaside vista from the back deck or courtyard, cosied up around the firepit. If you can stand leaving your lovely haven with its wood-lined walls and comfy bed, the island’s only pub is just a five-minute walk away for some of the most delicious pub fare (made using local produce) you’ve ever tasted.

The Lookout Cabin

The Lookout Cabin is the perfect Bruny Island accommodation for a couple’s trip. Cosy yet minimalist, this architect-designed space has a huge floor-to-ceiling window that is the true hero of the simple studio space. With views sweeping across Storm Bay and the Great Southern Ocean, you’ll almost be sad when the sun goes down – until you get to enjoy all the uninterrupted stars for your own light show. On a good night, you might even spot the Aurora Australis (Southern Lights). The cabin is nestled in bushland but is just a few minutes drive from Adventure Bay beach and Alonnah, making it an ideal spot to see a lot of the island.

Bruny Boathouse

The Bruny Boathouse really leans into its nautical roots with oars on the all-white walls, prints of sea creatures and woven seagrass baskets. But when you notice that there’s a sea view out of almost every window of this two-bedroom home, you’ll understand why. Sitting right on the waterfront at Alonnah, you’re treated to the d’Entrecasteaux Channel and Satellite Island vistas as well as all the perks of being in the main township of Bruny Island. The house is right on Shell Beach which is a great spot for beachcombing – and you can wash off the salt and sand under the outdoor shower or in the outdoor bath.

Bay Corner Retreat

You’d be forgiven for thinking you’d somehow ended up in far north Queensland at Bay Corner Retreat, given its location nestled amongst palms and ferns near Adventure Bay. The crisp air will remind you you’re not in a rainforest after all, but beautiful Bruny Island, which you can enjoy from the top verandah of this two-bedroom home. The wonders have embraced the outside greenery and brought it inside, with the house dotted with flourishing indoor plants in almost every room. Teamed with the wooden finishes, it gives the house a slightly retro 1970s vibe, perfect for a laid-back island getaway. The house comes fully equipped with everything you need to enjoy inside – like wine, coffee, books and records – and outside, including surfboards, kayaks, fishing rods and wetsuits.

Littlegrove

If you’re keen to dip your toe into the camping side of Bruny Island accommodation but would rather not sleep on the floor, Littlegrove might be your perfect alternative. Situated high up in an olive grove in Adventure Bay, this custom-built yurt has gorgeous views over to the famous Fluted Cape. The yurt is perfect for an intimate couple’s getaway, very cosy with its wood panelling and wool-lined walls, and with its own patio (complete with pink bathtub) to enjoy the fresh air and stunning island sunsets.
